Gypsy at La Philarmonie de Paris
Never before heard on French stages, the musical Gypsy, based on the memoirs of Gypsy Lee Rose, is presented in a version created by one of the great names in musical direction, Laurent Pelly.
Although he has also worked for the theatre, it is mainly in the field of opera and musicals that Laurent Pelly has made a name for himself, sometimes designing not only the staging but also the costumes and set design for his productions. A regular collaborator with the national operas in Paris and Lyon, the director has set his sights on Gypsy, a work considered to be a masterpiece of the musical comedy genre in the United States. Based on the autobiographical novel by Gypsy Lee Rose, a stripper who became famous in the 1930s, it tells the sad story of a mother consumed by a desire for fame that leads her to push her two daughters into the spotlight. But the girls have ambitions of their own… Jule Styne, Arthur Laurents and Steven Sondheim create a work of intensely jazzy colour and bittersweet atmosphere that bears witness to the end of an era.
