Focus on the 5th year composition course

Dec 3, 2024 | Cycle Pro, Elèves / anciens élèves, Faculty

The composition course is taught by Christopher Culpo in the 5th year of the Professional Cycle at IMEP – Paris College of Music.

This course prepares students to master the techniques needed to compose, orchestrate and arrange music, so that they can write in different styles on demand (for composers, creations, residencies, album productions, theatre, dance, commercials, music for images, etc.).

These skills are essential for the proper use of modern music technologies and complete the 5th year course, at the end of which students graduate.

The main idea behind the fifth year composition course is that the students learn to deal with different musical forms. They compose three projects, with different instrumentation, each with its own specific challenge, as a way to preparing them to be able to function in different musical settings as composers.

At the graduation ceremony, a trio or quartet of professional musicians perform on stage the compositions created by the students throughout the year, providing a concrete showcase for the work accomplished during the course.
