3pm : Developing Your Creativity in
Composition presented by Richard Carrick
Composition Chair Richard Carrick will discuss some strategies that he uses in his own compositions and that are used at Berklee to help students “think outside the box” when it comes to composition and orchestration. Dr. Carrick will also demonstrate extended piano techniques.
4pm : Triads for the Improvising Guitarist: Visualizing Chord, presented by Jane Miller
Guitarists, and musicians in general, have the power of visualization to help navigate the instrument in relation to chord progressions and complex harmony. When we see that simple triads sit on top of seventh chords in theory, we can use those triads as a way to comp chords on the three highest strings. That leads to a view of the fretboard that guides our way to creating lines that “make the changes,” relating to the harmonic structure. We can use whatever visual cues or shortcuts we find to help us connect phrases from one chord to another even when the progression moves through different keys. This class will be useful to guitarists as well as other instrumentalists and vocalists who are interested in developing their improvisation skills.
6pm : The Strength of Collaboration in Film and Game Music, presented by par Marc Yu
Ever wonder what a media composer and audio director does? This presentation is a glimpse into the world of audio production in media. Join Marc as he talks about what collaboration looks like in the field of audio production, what you might find yourself doing, and stories from the studio!
